Wolverhampton Mountaineering Club
From ...Failure by Hilary Clark
...All the best books say that mountaineers turn back when they know it is prudent to do so.
My moment of decision had come! Fear was rapidly dispelling the persistence that I had thought
would keep me going to the summit. It was not an irrational or groundless fear that could be
ignored but a horrible conviction that a fall was a real possibility. We were roped, so the
fall was not likely to be long, but we were on a big mountain and lesser injuries would have
mattered. I looked at the ridge and thought it over again. ...'No, I think it would not be
right to go on.' .....and so we turned round and slowly plodded back down to the hut.
